Laundry Noise from Hell
People are always welcome to suggest new noises to me, although I can't promise to implement them all. Suggestions are always inspiring, but sometimes strange to me. Those strange requests become even more puzzling, when they become recurrent. All that is left for me to do then, is to implement them as new soundscapes, and wait for user testimonials to appear and provide me with an answer about their use.
When Frank Hell - a regular to this website - suggested a laundromat soundscape, it was the third time such a request came to me. I could have told him to go to hell (pun intended), but instead, I told Hell to go to the laundromat, equipped with some portable audio recording equipment made available to him. He did complete the work brilliantly. Thank you, Frank!
It is always nice to be able to rely on people who not only have suggestions, but kindly offer to participate in the quest to record these sounds too (a word to the wise, here).

Stéphane!! As always, you are a godsend for us scatterbrained ADHD kin <3 I'd been wringing my hands over this Spanish presentation and essay I have due, but I just pounded out a good 80% of my rough draft outline in like 30 minutes! And this is for someone who HATES writing for the most part :") It's incredible how well this noise blends into my brain—I turn it off and the silence is deafening!
●
+ 1 . I was about to request a laundromat soundscape from you but I was probably the 1.000st person. I love this!
●
What the Hell (hehe)? I had no idea that I would love this soundscape. It evokes many, many days spent at laundromats off and on in my life. Oddly soothing. Thanks! <3
●
Displaced city person & this really is comforting right now. Reminds me of those cozy winter nights at the laundromat when noone was around. Only wish the street noise had a few car beeps & voices, then it would really feel like home. I muted that along with the drum sounds & Frank - lol, sorry Frank! - to get a nice even machine drone with a hint of rattle & running water.
●
I love this generator. It reminds me of my dad. He'd always put the laundry on before we all went to bed, so I'd go to sleep listening to the hum from across the house. <3
●
You need to pair this with Examination time! It sounds like you are studying with your friends while waiting for your clothes to finish washing. So comforting.
●
*Laundry Noise Machine* Laundry time is my quiet time alone. It's usually the only 2 hours of solitude during the week where I can focus on completing one task at my own pace while enjoying the aroma of fabric softener. This soundscape was so relaxing without inducing a need to sleep.
●
Reminds me of lying on the bench doing calculus homework with my roommate while waiting for our clothes to finish. So so soothing :]
●
This is really great. I forgot how calming and numbing this sound is. And how well it helps me to chill and focus. Like others here, it reminds of those days in college sitting in the laundromat studying. Thank you Frank and Dr. Ir. Stéphane Pigeon!
●
One time for work I had to live for a month in my tent on a campsite, using a laundromat nearby. Late one evening, I was putting away the clothes I had washed earlier, and realized that one of my favorite socks was missing. I remember retracing my steps with a flashlight, and going back to open every drum at the laundromat. This generator reminds me of the sheer joy I felt when I found it!
●
Ah the laundromat, the sound of studying on a Sunday when doing my master's. Very calming, and thankfully this one comes without that one person speaking loudly on the phone, disrupting the trance... Thanks for fulfilling this 'odd request'! - Michelle
●
The noise of the laundromat got me through so many exams in college and helps me stay focused at work. This is by far my favorite noise maker that I have ever found and its so helpful to have something just steadily repeating. Honestly it's helped me stay calm when I've felt overwhelmed during an exam or even after a long day at work. This is an amazing website and I recommend it to everyone!
●
Nothing puts me to sleep & keeps me asleep like laundry noises. Part of it is how well it masks my tinnitus, but it’s also just a nice, soothing sound that reminds me of being a kid. I would sleep on the couch in the living room when I was sick & could always hear the washer and dryer running. I also loved listening to books on tape & sitting on the dryer while/after it was running bc it was warm.
●
I have no idea why, but the sounds of the washer/dryer running was always soothing to me. It's repetitive, it's productive (something is being cleaned), and it also reminds me of weekends as that was the only time I ever had to go do laundry. This sound is soothing AND reminds me of checking something off my to-do list. I never would have thought to request it, but I'm glad someone did!
●
I love this, it is one of the only things that I can use to focus. My teachers hate when I use it in class though, saying I am distracted by my computer when it is the only thing keeping me from being distracted.
●
Since I was a kid I loved to sit in the bathroom, listening to the sound of the washing machine and enjoying the warmth of the dryer, and this sound is just perfect. <3
●
The thunder sounds stopped working for me, so I went to this one! It's just perfect as I get so distracted easily.
●
This is the most effective noise I have found.
●
This is a lonely night studying in the laundromat, an old neon sign flickering outside, the counter guy mindlessly flipping through an old magazine. This helps me focus on my board exam review tremendously. Thank you for this noise machine, Stephane!
●
Super relaxing and yet variable...
●
This goes great with 80's city pop and future funk for that nostalgic feel.
●
When I was in nursing school, I often studied while doing my laundry at the laundromat. Now that I am a nursing school professor, this most helps me focus when I'm grading tests!
●
When I saw this noise generator I knew this one would be a favorite. If you are a fan of early electronic music (Schaeffer/Varèse/Xenakis), like I am, you'll like this one. This noise generator is nice for studying.
●
This one helps me study so well, I don't know why! Something about the mechanical noises along with the street in the back is so welcoming, reminds me of when I used to hang out at the laundromat down the street with my friends as a child because my parents wouldn't let me stray too far from home!
●
I love this one so much and I really don't know why. Thinking about it feels strange but it's definitely one of my favorites here!
●
I find the sound of laundry being done soothing, even though I hate actually doing the laundry. My one request would be to add a spin cycle! Love the rhythmic thunk-thunk-thunk of an old washer spinning up. Sometimes I mix the laundromat sound with the industrial sounds to try to capture that.
●
Alternate subtitle: The Laundry Without Having To Bring Coins :P I love using this at work whenever I clean and disinfect around the workspace.
●
Hi, I discovered this site through an ADHD forum. Before my diagnosis, I always liked to study in mildly busy-sounding places like coffeeshops and coworking spaces. Because I can't go out often due to the pandemic, this helps me get into the headspace for studying. The customizable settings make me prefer it to the ASMR videos on Youtube as I can tune down some distracting noises. Thank you!
●
I can never focus on my work due to it being too quiet or not the correct background noise. This is perfect. It's not distinct enough to distract you from your work but it blends into the background well enough that it helps me focus. I love it!
●
When I was in college, the only place I could focus on any of my work was the laundry room in my dorm. This artful soundscape brings me back there and helps me shrug off all the distractions that fly my way!
●
Love love LOVE this! As I was sitting in the kitchen a couple of weeks ago with the washing machine on in the background, I realised how soothing I found the sound it made. Now that I'm using this, I feel so much more calm in my often hectic workplace. And I love the mix of sounds! The water, the clanking of drums, the machine in motion... all fab!
●
This is absolutely brilliant. Found it under "I'm a student with ADHD", which I do have (albeit graduated from school ages ago). I didn't even know I needed this. Thank you so, so much.
●
Thanks a lot for sharing this, now I can work peacefully :)
●
Living in an area with loads of Laundromats has conditioned me to find them relaxing, the only thing missing is the sound of my mom yelling at me from across the room to get the detergent haha! Never thought i'd find something so specific on here, but it's a pleasant surprise!
●
Last night as I was peacefully listening to the dryer at home, I was like, "I bet mynoise doesn't have a dryer sound." And here I am, happy to be proven wrong! I'm currently listening to this at the office and it gives my ears something to listen to that isn't distracting.
●
It's so weird but this actually works! I hate doing laundry but apparently the noise of the machine is exactly what I need when I try to focus on my homework. A wonderful addition!
●
I absolutely LOVE the Laundromat soundscape. It’s just so deliciously soothing. Thank you.
●
It's so nice. I've never thought about laundromats before but now I love them.
●
This is absolutely fantastic to use in a noisy working enviroment like mine!
●
This is perfect for reading.
●
There are very few sounds that just knock me out when I can't sleep, but there's something about the low-rumble industrial noises of Laundromat that makes me calm down and pass right out. Thank you for adding this!
●
I love it!
●
Laundromat was the only way my son could get his analytical essay completed for history class. A life-saver.
●
I wish, spinning sound has also been added. Most of the people loves the spinning sound most.
●
Laundromat is EXACTLY what helps me write. Helps me to feel desperate, isolated from the world, like I'm nurturing myself by doing the mundane tasks that make life go 'round. A laundromat is always warm and cozy from the hot air of the dryers. Makes me think of high school. My best friend's parents had a laundromat and had to go by every night to empty the change out of the machines. Bliss.
●
Amazing! I can actually smell the detergent. I didn't expect to enjoy this one, but it's great. Reminds me of Sunday afternoons for many years of my life.
●
Laundromats are not really a thing where I come from. So it's kind of nice to be able to get a sense of what they're like with this soundscape. Also, it's a surprisingly great background for writing my MA thesis. Thanks a ton!
●
Repetitive noises help me relax and focus, especially ones like the one from a washing machine that is noise blocking, varied but still has that "rotating drum" sound. I love hanging out in the laundry room at my apartment complex, but it (understandably) smells like detergent so this is perfect!
●
I listen to it and I'm seven years old again at the laundromat with my mom, playing a board game I brought with me to pass the time. The only thing missing is the sound of a small tv attached to the ceiling that's barely audible and playing an old, bad movie. I really like it.
●
At this point, I have been listening to this generator for years... It is still my go-to for when I need my brain to lock on to the task at hand. Well done, Frank and Stphane!
●
This was a brilliant idea - it takes me back to college when I could not afford washer and dryer. I experiment with different slider positions and animations - I tend to prefer the bass ranges. This has worked out great for my sleep ritual. I would sleep waiting in laundromats from being up late studying or having fun. Thanks!
●
When it's warm I like listening to "cool" sounds like rain, streams and waterfalls. But today my office is cold, so I was looking for a "warm" sound to help me focus. This is perfect. It reminds me of clean smells and warm clothes fresh from the dryer. Very cozy. :)
●
This laundromat soothes my mind and helps me focus at work like no other.
●
Love the laundromat soundscape! I grew up in apartments and my mother always went to the laundromat. I have some great childhood memories sitting there reading books or playing with toys while my mom folded clothes. Very soothing to my ears.
●
I cannot believe how well this generator works! Growing up in a large family, the laundry machine is always running and the noise has been such a constant in my life. I find that doing homework while listening to this generator relaxes and motivates me! It's also an amazing way to block out my tinnitus, thank you!
●
In my first year of college, I did a lot of reading, writing, and studying in the laundromat every Wednesday. Ten years later, listening to this still helps me focus when reading.
●
I tried out the Laundromat on a whim, and I am so glad I did! This is a wonderful background noise just to keep things from being too quiet, and it's also great for falling asleep! I don't even need to adjust the sliders, it's perfect with the default. <3
●
I used to sit in a laundromat for hours to get a wifi signal and that's how I met my best friends.
●
This is one of my top 5 sounds here. It delivers a powerfully soothing, steady sound with just enough variation to keep from annoying the listener making it the perfect background noise for a long day of writing and a godsend for an ADHD sufferer like me. It's especially effective when you click "animate."
●
When I was living on my own, I didn't have a washing mashine in my tiny flat, so I spent quite a bit of time at the laundromat. I loved it there. It's a place where you can watch people, or just take an hour off to read and write. I've also had some interesting chats in that laundromat, and there was a bakery on the other side of the street so I associate this noise with sweets!
●
As a child growing up, in a large family I was surrounded by people and noise, with limited space to study or read quietly. I spent many happy and quiet hours with a book on the floor or in a small student desk in my room just outside the door and even after leaving home, this remains a calming background noise I seek when I'm stressed or need to study.
●
For some reason I can focus for twice as long when trying to write essays listening to this, and it's so calming too. This website is a blessing!
●
This is in my top 5 favorite noises on this site. I combine this setting (Brain Wash) with the Farm noise setting Barn at Night. It blocks out distracting noises and puts my mind at ease. I even use it to help me sleep sometimes.
●
When I was a little girl, we didn't have a washing machine, and each week I'd go with Mama to the laundromat. I'd look for money under the machines, drink small cokes in glass bottles and eat orange nabs. (Peanut butter on cheese crackers for you non southerners.) By the time the clothes were done, my little bare feet would be black on the bottom! Precious memories of my mother.
●
I heard about this site from Tumblr and though I found another nice generator or two, I tried this one on a whim one day about 2 weeks ago. Within the first 10 seconds I could feel palpable tension leaving my body. I can't function without background noise, and while I enjoy online videos, this is infinitely more relaxing and easy, since it plays on a loop. Thank you so much! -K.
●
I worked as a seamstress in a theater company, and constantly had laundry going in our little shop. The sound is weirdly comforting to me. It seems like nothing that terrible can really be going on if you're in the middle of doing laundry. Thanks for this!
●
I recently found out that my 2w old daughter easily falls asleep while next to the tumble dryer - and she wakes up when we take her away. I was extremely pleased to find the Laundromat generator. It works perfectly!
●
Thank you for this, it reminds me so much of my grandparent's house, it's even almost making the scent of perfectly crisped waffles real too! I've searched for years to find a washing machine sound, thank you. I can still remember dragging a blanket into the dining room to fall asleep beside the washer and dryer, it's a shame my apartment is too small.
●
On my way to a 30/30 on my next exam thanks to this! It really helps me concentrate, and blocks the noise of people working on the street next to my window. Thank you ^^
●
Surprised at how much I love this. I remember as a kid hearing some of these laundry sounds through the wall at night while my mom caught up with chores. I also noticed my affinity for it at the massage therapist. In the quiet I could hear her laundry running in the next room, and realized I preferred that to music. Forgot all that till I heard this and didn't want to turn it off.
●
When I used to be in my grandparents' house, I would often play by the laundry machine in the basement, and later, in my grandfather's office. My grandfather passed a year ago, and we had to move grandma to a nursing home and sell the house. These noises make me feel like I'm there again, and my grandpa's just an arm's reach away. Thank you. Thank you so much.
●
Love this generator! Laundromats are one of my favorite places for some reason, and the noise is great for blocking out the sound of a noisy family when I'm trying to read my textbooks.
●
A big thank you to the person who thought to record laundromat sounds! It reminds me of times when I feel self-sufficient, doing paperwork with a purpose while the clothes get clean and dry. It's a comforting sound I can use to my advantage at my desk at work!
●
This really helped both with my headache and bad mood. It makes me feel like there's an exciting day ahead of me, starting lazy, waiting for laundry to finish, but promising lot ot creativity and happy encounters. I feel like I'm about to discover something.
●
The neighborhood laundromat was a safe, warm, and peaceful place during my tumultuous childhood. Thank you.
●
I love it! Reminds me of lazy afternoons spent in the laundromat reading a book, warm armfuls of towels, and the calming repetitiveness of folding clothes. Helps me to study as well because it blocks out other noises.
●
I swear, this laundromat mix could put me to sleep in a heartbeat. It's so relaxing!
●
When I was a little kid, the laundries were generally done around the same time I was put to bed at nights- so I probably associated the noise of a laundry machine to sleep / relaxation. Now this is perfect for me to concentrate on work and feel like I'm by myself, not in the office cubicle!
●
I've recently discovered a good way to concentrate is to play the laundromat generator with some beethoven string quartets over the top. Love it.
●
Years ago, I lived in an apartment complex where my brothers and I used to hang out in the laundromat there at late at night. We would bring a laptop, sit on the laundry machines and drink Dr. Peppers that we bought from the soda machine. Those are very fond memories of mine and so I really appreciate this generator! Thanks!
●
I've always liked the laundry room... a place where all the dirt gets washed away. This site is also very good for masking the light construction noise next door! Thank you!
●
Never would have guessed I'd love this noise, but it's become my favorite thing to listen to while writing.
●
ADD and worsening tinnitus are much less of a problem now. Thank you so much!
●
Having lived somewhere awful with my bed right next to the open laundry room door, I became accustomed to sleeping to the sound of laundry machines running. I've looked and looked and found no good washer/dryer noise generators... until now. I can't wait to go home, put in my headphones, and fall asleep to this. Until then... staying awake at work is going to be difficult!
●
My office is in the basement right next to the neighbors' laundry machine, which makes the most annoying start-and-stop laundry noise. This channel helps drown it out to the point that it doesn't bother me anymore, which is something I didn't think could be possible. Thank you!
●
Woo awesome! I was one of those weird people who put a request in on this one! great job!!
●
This one is perfect! Works for my anxiety problems :D
●
For an engineering student like myself, this is just awesome. Machines, machines, machines...
●
← this is about what it actually did sound like. So real... and not even made in Japan. :)
